FBE Human RIghts Commission in Colombia – August 2024

Members of the FBE Human RIghts Commission have arrived in Colombia in August 2024 for the 8th International Delegation of Jurists, the Colombia Caravana.

The Caravana is meeting with lawyers, judges and community leaders in the first week of a two week visit in five different regions of the country.

The aim is to research and publicise the human rights abuses in respect of indigenous people and their environment, and to focus on gender violence in that context as well as access to justice for those affected.

The lawyers who represent them are subjected to constant threats, attacks, and assasination. For example: in the Magdalena region, Artur Wierbicki and Sara Chandler (appropriately President and Secretary of the FBE Human Rights Commission) met with the ASOCOLEMAD (Women Lawyers Feminist Collective) who had lost one of their members who represented  victims and was assassinated for their work.to an assassination.

Members of a farming collective, elderly women who have been fighting for land rights for 27 years are represented by the ASOCOLEMAD lawyers. They gave their testimonies to the delegation in a group hearing  which left the Caravana members deeply moved and determined to raise their situation and to insist in meetings in week two in Bogotá, for example, with the Justice Ministry that their cases are properly concluded.

The Report from the Colombian Caravana will be issued soon.
